We are growing and are looking for experienced Design Systems Lead to join our team in Sydney!

Job Description

About the role

We are looking for a Design Systems Lead to own and evolve our design system as core delivery infrastructure. This role sits at the intersection of design and engineering, responsible for encoding design decisions into reusable, enforceable assets that allow quality to scale as the organisation grows.

This is not a role for someone who has worked within a design system. It is a role for someone who has built one, governed one, and has a clear point of view on how AI and code-first workflows are changing what a modern design system looks like. You will define the single source of truth between design intent and production code, and help the team move faster without losing consistency.

What you'll be doing

  • Own the organisation's design system across design and engineering

  • Define and maintain design tokens (colour, typography, spacing, elevation, motion)

  • Design and maintain reusable design components and patterns

  • Ensure strong alignment between Figma libraries, Storybook, and production components

  • Explore and implement code-first and AI-assisted workflows that speed up system delivery while keeping output within system constraints

  • Establish governance, contribution, and versioning models for the system

  • Document system usage so developers can self-serve with confidence

  • Reduce UI inconsistency and design debt across products

  • Partner closely with UI engineers and front-end teams to ensure feasibility and accuracy

  • Act as the internal advocate for the design system, running enablement sessions and helping developers build confidence using it.

What success looks like

  • Adoption: the system is the path of least resistance, teams use it because it is faster

  • Parity: a component in Figma looks and behaves exactly like its counterpart in Storybook and production

  • Velocity: engineers spend less time on pixel alignment and more time building features

  • Designers and developers share a clear, trusted source of truth

  • AI-assisted workflows improve system output without introducing drift or inconsistency

Desired Skills and Experience

What we're looking for

  • Hands-on experience building or managing a design system, not just consuming one

  • Demonstrated experience with AI-assisted design workflows, code-first prototyping, or agentic design system pipelines

  • A strong product or UI design background with deep experience in design systems

  • Advanced Figma expertise including variables, auto-layout, and complex component configurations

  • Technical fluency in HTML, CSS variables, and component APIs

  • Strong familiarity with design tokens and theming systems

  • Proven experience collaborating closely with engineering teams

  • A governance mindset that balances strong standards with the flexibility needed in a growing product

  • Strong visual UI design skills with a solid understanding of colour, typography, hierarchy, and spacing

Good to have

  • Experience with Angular Material or similar component frameworks

  • Accessibility knowledge (WCAG)

  • Experience scaling a design system in a growing organisation

  • Experience with Tokens Studio or similar token management tools

  • Experience documenting systems in Storybook

  • Experience in data-heavy or enterprise software environments
